The San Antonio Texas Temple is one of a series of detailed pencil drawings and paintings created by the artist Chad S. Hawkins. In 1989, at the age of seventeen, Chad started this unique temple series, becoming the original LDS artist to involve hidden spiritual images in his artwork.
To remind one of the importance of Christ’s atonement in temple work, the artist has subtly rendered the Savior’s image across the surface of the temple where the celestial room is located.
Additional imagery within the painting reminds us of our everyday dependence on the Savior. The Savior is the source of the living water that can quench our thirst for spiritual things. The lilies of the field (Matt. 6:28-29) bear record of his generous and personal care. The solid rocks at the painting’s base represent “the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; . . . a foundation if men build they cannot fall” (Helaman 5:12).
