The Washington D.C. Temple is one of a series of detailed pencil drawings and paintings created by the artist Chad S. Hawkins. In 1989, at the age of seventeen, Chad started this unique temple series becoming the original LDS artist to involve hidden spiritual images in his artwork.
The cleansing process symbolized in the window panels is described in the Doctrine and Covenants 93:1—“Verily, thus saith the Lord: It shall come to pass that every soul who forsaketh his sins and cometh unto me, and calleth on my name, and obeyeth my voice, and keepeth my commandments, shall see my face and know that I am.”
To combine the symbolism in the windows and the promise made in the scripture, Chad drew a portrait of Christ in the clouds above the window panels.
